When I first started designing brands, I used to jump straight into making logos and picking colors.
And then… I’d hit a wall.
Why?
Because I didn’t have a clear plan. I was creating visuals without first knowing the heart of the brand.
Over the years, I learned that the most beautiful, timeless brands all start the same way: with a solid, well-thought-out design brief.
It’s the roadmap that makes sure your brand doesn’t just look good — it feels right, connects with the right people, and tells your story in the clearest way possible.
That’s why I’ve created a Free Brand Design Brief PDF — the exact one I use for my own projects and with clients. You can download it, fill it in, and use it as your brand’s starting point. I’ll walk you through it here, step-by-step.
Step 1: Get Clear on Who You Are
Before you think about colors, fonts, or logos, you need to know what your brand stands for.
In the design brief, I guide you to answer questions like:
What’s your mission and purpose?
Who exactly is your audience?
What problem are you solving for them?
How do you want them to feel when they think of you?
When you can answer these honestly, the rest of your brand will almost design itself.
Step 2: Define Your Visual Vibe
This is where things start getting fun.
Inside the design brief, there’s a space to note:
Your color palette ideas
The kind of fonts that fit your style (playful, elegant, bold, minimal…)
The mood or “feeling” you want your brand to give off
Images, patterns, or textures you’re drawn to
I always tell clients to think of this as their brand’s personality wardrobe — you’re picking out the clothes your brand will “wear” every day.
Step 3: Shape Your Logo Vision
Your logo is your brand’s handshake — the first impression it makes.
In the brief, there’s a spot for:
The exact name and tagline you want to appear
Any icons or symbols you love
Styles you’re drawn to (modern, vintage, minimalist, bold)
Examples of logos that inspire you
Having this written down means that whether you design it yourself or hand it off to a professional, you’ll skip endless revisions and get something you truly love.
Step 4: Build Your Brand Guidelines
Once you have your core brand elements, you’ll want a simple set of rules for how to use them consistently.
The design brief already starts you in the right direction, with space for:
Color codes (so your red stays the same red everywhere)
Font names and when to use them
Logo variations and how they should appear
Image style (light and airy, bold and contrasty, etc.)
Step 5: Stay Consistent
A brand isn’t built overnight. It’s built by showing up the same way again and again until people instantly recognize you.
If you’ve filled in the free design brief, you already have your brand playbook — all you have to do now is follow it.
